Friends will tell you we’re cheap… hold onto a nickel until the buffalo squeals cheap… after all it is difficult to part with hard earned money. However that does not mean we’re not willing to pay for value and there are somethings you just can’t put a price on.

The internet is a great resource. You can find cheap parts, how to instructions and lots of opinions on what ever widget you have to have for your rig. You can find it all but that doesn’t mean you’ll get everything you need.

So what constitutes value? For us it is a shop that takes the time to work with us, explain options, spend the time needed to educate us and do what it takes to make sure we can make an informed decision. And if things don’t go as planned the shop works to make it right. Usually these shops are run by and filled with guys (gender neutral non-specific use of the term guy) who are real wheelers and car guys. If you listen, they will impart wisdom to you that you can’t buy. Whether you’re headed to Rubicon, the Baja or a road trip to Key West, they want to make sure your experience behind the wheel is one you wont forget.

When you find a shop that delivers great value don’t squander the opportunity. Develop that relationship… and that relationship goes both ways! When you find a shop that provides personal support, impeccable service and great value for the price be loyal. — Rant time: and by loyal we mean, don’t work a shop by asking for a lot of how to help or expert advice and then cruise the Internet for cheap parts that the shop sells. Yes talking with customers and helping them with advice, recommendations and insights from years of experience is good for business but don’t forget it is customer service so be a good customer if you take them up on the service.

We’ve been extremely lucky… we have found two great shops. You know thatMetal Tech 4×4 are our go to guys when it comes to our rig. Metal Tech produces and sells top quality aftermarket protection parts for your Toyota rig. They will spend the time to make sure you get the information you need to pick the right protection and suspension components for your style of wheeling. They will install the parts or help you understand how to install them yourself. In fact it was Mark, one of the owners who helped us get into wheeling and has been instrumental in developing our skills… He has probably forgotten more about wheeling Toyota’s than we’ll ever know. A big part of us taking on Baja was based on the skills Mark and LT taught us when they let us tag along with them on the Rubicon a few years back.

More recently, we picked up a used commuter car while the Blue Bunny goes through its latest incarnation over at Metal Tech 4×4. I can promise you, any 24 year old car needs a little love to stay in top form and our “new to us” commuter car was no exception. Sure we enjoy working on cars, just check out or videos, but there is a lot to be said for having a shop that you trust who will take care of your car like its their own. Especially when your daily commute is 150 mile round trip every day.

When it came to finding a repair shop for this car we called a couple, then made an appoint for them to look at the car and provide a recommendation for its care and feeding. Sure it was their chance to checkout the car but it was also our opportunity to see what they would find (we already knew a couple things they should find), how they would present a prioritized work list and see how they keep the shop looking (especially at the end of a busy day). The shop that stood out for us was Silverdale Autoworks. They found what we expected and a little more. They gave us estimates for the different work and ranked the work according to priority based on what we told them was important to us. Now with some 25,000 more miles on the car and a few trips to the their shop to repair an oil leak, refresh the cooling system and change more oil than we thought one motor could hold, Silverdale Autoworks has proven their value and earned our loyalty.

Is there a moral to this story? Yes. Take the time to find a shop that will provide you with great value and reward that shop with your loyalty. If you work with the shop, your car guy will do his best to make sure your car or rig can take you on the adventure of a life time.

Do’s and don’ts of diagnosing a car’s enigmatic little message

article from nbcnews.com 09/21/2007

It’s just a little amber lamp in the dashboard, a tiny bulb behind a plastic pane the size of a postage stamp, inscribed with a very big message.

Depending on the car’s make and model, it might say “CHECK ENGINE,” as if you possessed the ability to pry open the hood and make a snap diagnosis. Others say “SERVICE ENGINE SOON,” worded just vaguely enough to enable us procrastinators.

No matter how it’s communicated, the effect can be unnerving. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of engines? Only the computer knows.

But unraveling the mystery of the enigmatic little lamp is considerably easier — and usually less painful — than most people think. While there’s little reason to shut the vehicle off and sprint for the nearest mechanic, the light shouldn’t be ignored for long.

“It’s your car’s way of telling you, ‘You might be meeting Larry the tow-truck guy soon,’” says Bill Jaap, owner of Good Carma VW and Audi Repair in Minneapolis. “It’s a warning, and it can be menacing. Even though the car still runs well, I think it’s a good idea to bring it in.”

What it is
The lamp’s formal name is the malfunction indication light, or MIL.

Today’s cars are equipped with dozens of sensors and a computer that make on-the-fly adjustments to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize carbon emissions. If a sensor detects something amiss, it sends a code to the computer, and voila: “CHECK ENGINE.”

That code is stored in the computer — and the light stays on — until it’s retrieved. And that part is surprisingly simple: It’s just a matter of plugging a handheld gadget into a connector that’s usually located beneath the steering column.

What not to do
Panic. Unless your car is idling rough, starting hard, hesitating or smoking, it’s OK to keep driving when the light comes on. (In a few models, the light will flash or turn red if the problem is serious. If this happens, DO pull over ASAP.)

But it’s unwise to ignore it. For one thing, the problem will likely mean a failed emissions inspection down the line. For another, many of these small, undetectable problems can cause costly engine damage if left untreated.

“It’s kind of a false signal to some people who maybe have been driving around with it on for a year,” Jaap says. “Even though the problem can be very slight, my opinion is that you shouldn’t get desensitized to it. It’s on for a reason.”

Tip: Don’t pay a mechanic to read the code unless the shop offers to credit the money back in related repairs. The service is easy enough to get for free.

What to do
Obviously, if the car is under warranty, take it to the dealer. But with older cars, many mechanics and auto-parts stores will retrieve the code gratis.

Do-it-yourselfers can purchase code readers for $50 to $200, and some software programs will turn your laptop into a scan tool with a special connector. Some readers give a number that needs to be cross-referenced; more expensive scanners will display details.

But this is where a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, Jaap cautions. The readings are often vague, and won’t necessarily tell you what needs doing.

“It can be even more expensive to try and guess what’s going to fix it, just based on what a scan at an auto-parts store tells you,” Jaap says. “That’s kind of hearsay and conjecture, and I’d go broke if I did that.”

At the very least, the code can help you (or your mechanic) decide whether it’s something that can be put off for a bit.

Can’t my car just tell me what’s wrong?
Said Deep, a spokesman for Ford Motor Co., says indicators on modern cars are getting more sophisticated, telling drivers, for instance, how close they are to needing an oil change, or when a tire is getting low.

“But there’s a limited amount of real estate on the instrument panel,” Deep says, “and there’s a certain amount of information overload that we want to avoid.

Carmakers are only adding messages that drivers are comfortable dealing with — specific messages for a headlight out, say, or low washer fluid.

“When we get into computer operations, like delicate air/gas mixture issues or the way your transmission shifts, that’s something we think is more suited for a trained mechanic with the proper equipment,” Deep says.

So what’s the light saying?
The computer can detect scores of possible problems, ranging from silly to sinister. As often as not, the CEL comes on when the gas cap isn’t screwed on tight enough or the oil dipstick isn’t pushed in all the way.

But let’s say the computer indicates a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, an often troublesome doodad that measures the amount of oxygen in your exhaust. Without its feedback, the engine will surely start, run and seem to perform normally. Fuel economy may dip a bit, though you’ll hardly notice. Such problems can be verified and treated at your local trustworthy automotive shop.

Article from carcare.org, July 10, 2012

Summer’s extreme temperatures can destroy a vehicle’s battery. The Car Care Council advises vehicle owners to have their cars’ batteries tested periodically and replaced, if necessary, to avoid being stranded.

Excessive heat and overcharging shortens the life of a battery. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which then damages the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate, which will eventually destroy a battery.

“When most motorists think of dead batteries that cause starting failure, they think of severe winter weather, but summer heat is the real culprit,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Many battery problems start long before the temperatures drop. A few simple steps now can help you avoid the cost and inconvenience of a breakdown later.”

To get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following:

• Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging.

• If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary.

• Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified.

• Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.
